Joseph Lowe Postcards

Joseph Lowe was a renowned and prolific photographer, who lived in Patterdale between the early 1890’s and 1934. He is best known for his landscape photographs of the Lake District, particularly of Ullswater and Patterdale, many of which were sold as post-cards to tourists. He also recorded many events in the dale, such as the flood damage in Glenridding when Keppel Cove Dam burst in 1927 and at various sporting events. From the numbering system he used for the post-cards, he may have taken over 4,400 different photographs. In this section we have created an index of those that we have found, that were used for post-cards (over 500 so far). Where we have a copy, we show a thumbnail that can be clicked on to show a larger view along with any other details we know. Most of the estimated dates are stated as 'Pre', as they are derived from postmarks or from the dates we know certain houses were built.
